In response to the design criteria of the Decatur Modern competition, NOSANCHUK developed a system of materials and construction techniques that address the needs of a future owner, while satisfying the cost conscious developer. This is achieved through the use of limited finish pallets and a simple, straight-lined structure. Stucco, wood, and stone as the exterior and interior finishes limit the number of trades, creating a more efficient and timely construction process. This approach is also seen in the linear nature of the plane, a basic rectangle that allows for the ease of layout, from footing through finish work.
This sensitivity carries through to the narrow rectangular site. Conscious of the proximity of the homes to either side of the residence, a collection of porthole windows provide light to the middle of the home, while creating a sense of interior privacy and breaking up the flat plane of the exterior. The front and rear of the home has a more generous use of glass and wood.
